DAY FIVE

“You look tired, Abs.”

Abby smiled at her computer, too happy to see Andrew’s face staring back at her to care how tired she looked or even felt at the moment.

“I know. I am tired. We had a lot to get done here, plus getting Ben out to see some of the sights. It’s been a whirlwind trip.”

Andrew tilted his head to the side, smiling at her over the airwaves. “I hope you’re taking time for yourself?”

“Ha!” was the only response she could muster. She turned on her side to adjust her laptop so she could see him a bit better. Abby was sprawled out on her bed, drinking her coffee and greeting the day as Andrew was winding his down at the office in London.

“You know, I’ll be back on St. Kitts in about two or three weeks. We start the initial planning phase at that time and we’re all meeting there to get the ball rolling.”

Abby felt her tummy turn over once. The offer from Elizabeth was still weighing heavily on her and she had yet to bring it up to Andrew. She wasn’t sure if she would make herself feel better or worse by telling him. It’s like when you cheat on someone and tell them about it to ease your own guilt, she mused.

“That’s good news. For me.” Abby smiled coyly. She wanted to tell him about the offer but felt that the air around her was saturated by the silence she still needed while she made up her mind. It was an internal struggle for Abby, as she believed in honesty with those around her, especially with someone she was building a relationship with. No matter what the distance.

Andrew must have seen her hesitation, because he didn’t let her distracted answers roll idly by. “Abs, where are you today? I know you’ve got a lot going on, but you seem like you’ve checked out. You okay?”

Abby sat up and leaned against the headrest of the bed, propping the computer in her lap. She opened her mouth and closed it again quickly, stopping the words from escaping. Andrew watched her, and had even stopped shuffling papers so he could sit down at his desk and give her his full attention.

“I was offered a job here. It’s a good one, with benefits and room for growth. Plus they’d start me at my old salary.”

Abby watched Andrew’s face for his reaction. He nodded, averting his eyes from the screen, and pursed his lips together in quiet contemplation. “Okay. And what are you thinking?”

Abby shrugged her shoulders. “That’s just it. I don’t know what I’m thinking, Andrew. About any of this. I’m packing up my life and moving to an island. An island! It’s great and crazy, but am I being too crazy?”

“Well, only one person can answer that Abby, and it’s you.” He turned back to the screen and looked directly into the camera, speaking to Abby. “Your sister will be more than disappointed, you know.”

And that’s the one thing I don’t need to hear right now, she thought.
